All about the Coraline movie

The Coraline movie is here! Neil Gaiman's excellent children's novel Coraline has become a suitably magical movie directed by the highly talented Henry Selick, the man that directed the 1993 cult classic animated movie 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'. If any director was able to bring Gaiman's surreal tale of people with Button-eyes in an alternate vision of our real world, it is Selick. The look of the Coraline movie is a superb example of stop-motion animation, a filmmaking process that can truly be exciting when done right.

Where the original book was of the same dark and twisted nature that we have all come to expect and demand from Neil Gaiman, the look of the Coraline movie took some viewers by surprise with its palette of vibrant colour and the style of animation. The Coraline movie is a marvellous piece to view, and will thrill viewers of every generation with its nightmarish story and highly entertaining cast of characters.

The acting talent that signed on to the stop motion adventures of the Coraline movie is extremely impressive too. Dakota Fanning takes the title role of Coraline herself, and the rest of the cast has a number of British TV stars involved, namely Ian McShane, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Teri Hatcher performs the chilling voice of both versions of Coraline's mother. The Coraline movie's wisecracking feline friend is voiced by John Hodgman.

It is somewhat apt that such a strange story is adapted in such a way that it does capture the atmosphere of a dream. Stop-motion has that wonderful otherworldly edge to it that Computer generated effects are yet to possess. There is something wonderfully odd about stop motion, especially here in the Coraline movie. It might be the knowledge that the viewer is witnessing inanimate objects moving around on a giant screen, or it might just be that the finished style of a stop-mo movie is so different to various other animated movies of the modern scene.

While the Coraline movie is not really as packed with lingering images as The Nightmare Before Christmas, it is certainly not missing it's visual delights. Just wait for the musical scenes, the strange transformations of the characters, and of course, the chilling buttons that people have in place of eyes in the alternate universe. Viewers that haven't read the story are in for a real treat as they discover the strange world that Gaiman created, a world that is like ours, just somewhat skewed.

For people who have enjoyed the book (and it has been enjoyed by just as many grown-ups as youngsters), the Coraline Movie is about as a faithful movie version of the Coraline novel as it's possible to get. This is one children's film that is going to become a much-loved classic for every generation. The Coraline movie is pure magic.
