Two More State Championship Contenders (Newsday)
In the “Winter Preview,” I pegged three wrestlers to watch, Long Beach’s Dylan
Palacio, Jamel Hudson of St. Anthony’s and Glenn’s James DeKrone. With the
season in full swing, here are two more wrestlers capable of winning a state
title next month in Albany. Nick Piccininni, Ward Melville, 106, Fr. (19-0)-
As far as the lighter weights go, Piccininni has been as unstoppable as they
come. His undefeated record has been full of stellar opposition, including a
January 6th decision win over Brentwood’s Eric Orellana (23-1). This past
weekend, he went 4-0 with two pins, a forfeit and a technical fall. If he wins
states, he would be the first Long Island freshman to do so since Hauppauge’s
Mark West in 2009. Dante Salkey, Uniondale, 285, Sr. (18-0)- He pinned East
Islip’s Dan Hayden on December 6th, and three weeks later at the Uniondale
Duals, took a 4-3 decision from Smithtown West’s Mike Hughes (22-1) and an 8-7
win against Island Trees’ Louis Butzgy. And how about this for a drought? No
Long Island heavyweight has won a state title since Wyandanch’s Thomas Marrero
