Useful PC Gaming Terms
If you are new to PC gaming you might be a bit confused by some of the terms used. However it should not take you long to pick these terms up and before you know it they will become a part of your vocabulary. Here are just a few of the most common terms you will hear in regards to PC gaming.
Graphics Processing Unit (CPU). This is important because it is the chip on your gaming card that produces images. The quality of the images that you see in your games will be determined by the type of CPU that you have.
Texture Mapping. You are almost certain to have observed texture mapping but you may not have known what it was called. Texture mapping is the ability to make images look 3D and in today's day and age, this is very important. It involves using a bitmap image to produce items that look convincing but that don't require a lot of computer processing power.
Frame Rate. The frame rate refers to the speed of the appearance of images on your screen that produces the illusion of movement. These days the best games will require a frame rate of anywhere up to sixty frames per second. If the frame rate is any lower than 30 frames per second it will start to look clunky.
Artifact. Anything which pops up on the computer screen in the middle of a game which shouldn't be there is known as an artifact. The reason these appear is because your CPU is not able to cope with the demands that are being put on it. It could also be a sign that there is something else slowing your computer down; for example a virus or a problem with your drivers.
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP). The space where your graphics card may be connected in order to allow you to play PC games is known as an APG. Most modern PCs no longer have a AGP but your computer still might.
Gaming cards are very important to game enthusiasts all over the world, which means that being geared up for all eventualities certainly is the way to go. r4 is the place to obtain everything you need.
