HDTV tuner in new tv?
Im looking to get a small lcd tv for my dorm. I am going to have standard cable and not get any HDTV channels. What does all these built in tuners mean in tese different tvs? ATSC digital/Clear QAM/NTSC? Which one will pick up the local HD channels around my dorm for free??? Thanks!
If you are in the U.S., any new TV you buy will have an ATSC tuner for digital over-the-air reception with an antenna, and an NTSC tuner for analog channels received via basic cable (no cable box). Upscale sets will also have a QAM tuner for receiving the unencrypted digital channels on basic cable.
You cannot count on getting HD channels for free from any source except an over-the-air antenna. A set with the QAM tuner will get you the unencrypted digital channels on the cable, some of which might be in HD, but most will be SD (standard definition). Also, U.S. cable companies are rapidly migrating their desirable cable-only channels off of basic cable (both analog and QAM) to their encrypted digital packages. You need a set top box and a paid subscription to receive them.
Bottom line: with no cable box in your dorm room and if the building is supplied with a basic cable service, you realistically can't count on much more than your local broadcast channels in analog. If that's not true now, it will be eventually.
You might be able to get some HD channels via an indoor over-the-air antenna, depending on your location (mainly, how close you are to the TV transmitting towers).
