Having a UPS is a good thing for your hard drive, plus you can have enough time to save and backup working files. Also avoid transporting or simply shaking the Computer when it is on. This is potentially damaging to the hard drive as well.
To avoid problems with your RAM, make sure that you insert the memory into the slot properly and tightly. If you experience lag or slowness of application, don't panic and assume that the memory module is damaged. This can also mean that the application you are using require more memory than what you currently have. You have to buy new ones to work in a faster environment.
The same can be said about video cards. It is important to insert them tightly in the PCI or AGP slot. Also check the VGA cables to ensure that there is a display in the monitor. An updated driver for the video card is also important.
External peripherals like the keyboard, mouse, monitor and printers need to be cleaned on a regular basis to ensure that they are running smoothly. From weekly to quarterly, these Computer Hardware needs regular maintenance. Believe me, it can save a whole lot of your time in the future if you keep them well maintained.
